[Jina] teachingliterature.org

Hello, here're a few interesting lesson ideas from teachingliterature.org.

1. Understanding perspectives. Introduce students to theory systems (e.g. psychological criticism, feminist literary theory). Invite them to highlight one text from popular culture/ media that got their attention and to apply one theory in their analysis. The application of different theories on the same text will encourage students to be more open in their interpretations.

2. Understanding narrative. Invite students to tape record oral conversations with others (with permission). In transcribing, they should analyse how a narrative is told, with emphasis on the language, such as speech patterns and any repetition of certain words.

3. To better prepare for the discrepancies in the interpretations of text between teacher and students, the teacher could read an unseen text and note patterns in her interpretation. Understanding why he/ she interprets text in a certain way will help identify the perspective students are more likely to take.

  1. Hi Jina

I was surfing through other websites and I came across understanding perspective multiple times. It suggest the importance of the application of this theory to the classroom whereby initially I feel that that it may be daunting for the secondary school students to memories and understand the different perspectives. However, it appears that understanding these theories will help in facilitating analysis of any text whereby students will not only find the text easier to read due to them being more open in their interpretation but also, helping them connect their own experiences to the text.

  2. I thought what was very interesting about this website was how it guided us to capture our thought pattern and to verbalize it in such a way that it can be taught to the students. The general "feel" towards Literature is that it is a subject which one "either has the flair for it or not", and that it's not a subject that deals with structure. However, if the teacher is able to capture his or her own though pattern, and teach it to the students, I think the students will be less apprehensive about approaching this subject.
