Hi,
This is a website from the Academy of American Poets. It is a wonderful website with plentiful of resources for both educators and students alike for teaching and learning about poetry respectively.
1. The use of Audio and Visual resources
This website encourages teachers, via the For Educators tab, to use audio and visual tapes of poetry to spark an interest in poetry. This way the student is able to see and hear what poetry is all about and the importance of the rhythm and pause in this medium. The tab also includes various useful tips for conducting a poetry lesson in terms of preparation, reading, writing and outside classroom activities.
2. Variety of Lesson Plans
There are also various lesson plans from secondary school teachers in New York and Colorado. It includes detailed lesson procedures with the objectives and intended learning outcome. This makes it a very comprehensive plan where other teachers can get ideas from as well. It also focuses on a pedagogy that is student centered. However, most of the activities do seem to be teacher-directed. There is minimum collaborative work. Despite these, it still has various merits in terms of variety.
3. Ease of Obtaining Information
The website is very comprehensive and finding information for both educators and learning is accessible. It even includes a forum for both participants. This allows for individuals to share on their experiences of the lessons and to ask their queries. It even includes a selection of good poetry to teach and a good base of poems that allows for easy access.
Overall, if the focus is on American poetry, this website has been very useful and comprehensive. I recommend it for sure!

ReplyDeleteHi Sandra, thanks for sharing this site!
ReplyDeleteThis website is great as a resource pool of poems suitable for teens. They are age-appropriate and very suitable for lower secondary students who may be fresh out of primary school and may not be able to handle too much complexity. It is a great introduction to American poetry which I am unfamiliar with.

I think I chanced upon this website while I was preparing for one of my lessons during ESE. This website would be very useful if we were to teach a class on American poetry, or even if we want to focus on teaching themes in poems. There is a weblink that leads to a classification of poems according to themes, which is really awesome! Thank you for sharing this weblink Sandra!
ReplyDeleteHi Sandra,
ReplyDeleteGreat website on American poetry. I like that some of the poems by certain poets are also published on the website, making it easy for us to source for new and interesting teaching materials. Found some great poems that I have never read before too!
