I suppose this would be obvious to most, but I just thought I'd like to point out how sparknotes can actually be useful for teachers as well.
1) Accessibility
Everything is there. Really. Almost. Everything.
2) Organization of information
Sparknotes breaks the information about a particularly work into broad categories, such as context, plot overviews, character analysis, and themes. The analysis isn't the most penetrating, but it provides quick summaries of sections of a work. This makes sparknotes useful as a tool for selecting, or simply surveying potential new material as well.
3) Interactivity and multimodality
Sparknotes also has its own videos at the moment, which seek to re-represent works in visual medium. While, unfortunately, our literature syllabus has yet to take into account the way literature is constantly being reinterpreted and portrayed today, it can be useful as a resource to get them to think about reinterpretation, and ultimately, the relevance to their lives.
