Website URL: http://www.poets.org/index.php
What I like about this website:
1. Need a poem? How about: Great Poems to Teach
Offers a wide selection of poems to choose from based on popularity, imagery, poetic forms, narratives, irony etc. Some of the poems also come with a voice recorded reading. For teachers who are not very familiar with poetry, I think this will be a good place to start.
2. Poems for every occasion
If you're looking to teach poetry based of themes, the website also has a wide variety to choose from. Each theme also comes with an introduction describing what the theme is about, key/major poets related to the theme and so on. Want to know more about the poet and his other works? Simply search his/her name and be transferred to his/her page where you can read up more about the poet and his/her works, including narratives.
3. Poetry 101: Resources for Beginners
If poetry is not your forte, this might be a good place to start. From pages such as "How to Read a Poem" to "Featured Essays", the page offers many exciting reads and links to click on!
Hi Judy, the website is particularly useful due to its well-organized structure. The poems are grouped according to certain characteristics that they are renowned for. This allows teachers (and students) the convenience of gathering in just a few clicks poems associated with a particular theme or poetic devices such as imagery, irony and more. What I really love most about this website is its discussion forum. This website not only seeks to bring poetry to the layman, but also brings many aspiring poets together where they can share their passion and thoughts about poetry.
ReplyDeleteI also like the section titled “Poetry101: Songs of Innocence & Experience” where people post their poems and receive feedback. This would be useful for students who are interested in sharing their poems and honing their poetry-writing skills (and provides a sense of privacy through anonymity; it is where they can receive constructive feedback without fear of judgment).
